Garbage in the ocean and on beaches is a major threat to the survival of many animals, including sea turtles. Pom Pom Island is critical nesting habitat for both Green and Hawksbill turtles. Every year we are lucky to see them returning to lay their eggs on our beaches. Unfortunately, garbage that has been tossed into the ocean washes up onto Pom Pom’s sandy beaches on a regular basis.

One of our goals here is to do what we can to help clean the Celebes Sea that surrounds Pom Pom, and make it a safe environment for our precious turtles.

Yesterday afternoon, under sunny skies, the Pom Pom Island Resort guests and staff ventured out on a one hour beach cleaning event. A total of 44 large trash bags of garbage were collected thanks to our great efforts.

Afterwards we enjoyed complimentary celebratory refreshments in the restaurant and listened as our new Resort Manager, who is also a marine biologist, gave a very interesting explanation of sea turtle ecology. We are looking forward to spending more time on the beach with our guests on our next “Beach Walk for Nature”.
