Our mystery bird, the Barred Rail, is becoming a little better know. Quentin Phillipps, the famous Author of the “Phillipps Guide to the Birds of Borneo, Sabah, Sarawak, Brunei and Kalimantan” has kindly included it in his latest book. He has very kindly sent us a copy of the latest edition for our guests who visit the Island to assist them with identifying the bird species on our Island.
For our bird it says ” Water Rail, rare vagrant to the west coast of Borneo, six records only. Not yet recorded in Sabah or the Philippines therefore appears to cross the South China sea directly from Vietnam. Call: Grunting notes raising in the middle of the call to high pitched trilling whistles likened to piglets squealing and usually dying away into more grunts.”
