We have accomplished another successful mission for removal of the Crown of Thorns starfish from the beautiful reefs at Mantabuan. Mike, Yunus and myself spent this morning seeking them out and collecting them up into baskets for safe removal from the sea. It is very important not to harm them whilst removing them from the sea as this can stress them and make them release their eggs. We destroy them humanely well away from the beach. A few Crown of Thorns starfish will actually do good to a reef, allowing the slower growing corals a chance amongst the fast growing corals and giving a balance to a reef, but unfortunately in large numbers they can destroy everything. Today we took about 750 from the Reef, so well done to our patient boatmen, maintenance crew for assisting us with this.

私たちのもう１つのミッション・・・マンタブアン島の美しいさんご礁からのオニヒトデの除去。（*オニヒトデ・・・・輻長約15cmで、多数の腕を持ち、全身が棘に覆われた、大型のヒトデ。サンゴを食べ、時に珊瑚礁の破壊者と目される。）
今朝、マイクとユヌスと一緒にバスケットを用意してオニヒトデの除去活動に行ってきたのよ。回収したオニヒトデは海中でバスケットにいれてボートへ引き揚げる。。。オニヒトデってストレスを感じるとたくさんの卵を海中に放出するのよね・・・だから傷つけないように取り除くのがまた大変！回収したオニヒトデはビーチから離れた場所で処分。実際、オニヒトデって珊瑚の急成長をコントロールして海中ライフのバランスを保つために良い働きをするもの。だけど、こうもたくさん増えてしまったら珊瑚を壊滅させるだけでもうどうしようもない。。なんと今日は７５０匹ものオニヒトデを回収・・・海ではボートスタッフ、陸ではメンテナンススタッフともにみんなで頑張りました。
