~Sally’s Diary~

Our staff have been following the World Wildlife Fund training programme and have just completed 2 full days of training for turtle egg hatchery.  The course was run by Gavin Jollis, who is based at Semporna, WWF and he ran a full and very informative course.   Sally attended the first day training in Semporna which covered the law on turtles, best methods for protecting the turtles and future ideas for contining this work, alongside working on threats to turtles and what can be done to counteract them, with talks and presentations by WWF, Irwan Isnain from Sabah Parks and Jimli Perijin from Sahah Wildlife Department.

The next day was based at Pom Pom Island Resort, for more talks then practical training in the field, or in this case, our beach.  Talks and discussions were given by Irwan again for considering the best methods for managing the hatchery, patrolling and monitoring of nesting beaches, plus tagging and turtle strandings.  Rahayu Sulkifli from WWF gave a talk on Turtle Eco Tourism then Amelia Ng gave a talk on her experience as a marine biologist working at a Resort and managing the hatchery.  The afternoon comprised of practical training on the best methods for locating and moving the eggs, correct procedures for placing them in the new site, then how to collect data by tagging and measuring the turtles.

There was a photo and appreciation certificate given to all the participants, who ranged from local dive resorts and businesses, to our neighbours from nearby islands who want to protect the turtles.

At Pom Pom Island we want to thank everyone for this enjoyable and informative training session.
